Manufacturing railway rolling stock involves different stages during which the materials and sub-assemblies must be moved within the plant. Generally, a manufacturing plant for railway carriages and locomotives covers a very large area and specialized equipment is required to move materials from one zone to the next.
Modern railway carriages contain long sections of lightweight materials which must be moved around the plant. The size, length, weight and structure of the equipment requires suitable transporters to move materials efficiently and safely. A 15- or 20-metre-long steel section must be handled carefully to avoid accidental bending while being shuttled from one area of the plant to another.
Morello has designed and provided special movers for railway carriages, large locomotive and trams to enable safer and more efficient in-plant operations.
Whether for high-speed or heavy-load transport, for conventional rail networks or local transport, Morello can provide a custom-built mover solution for your operations.
For rail/transportation manufacturing and MRO operations, Morello’s solutions have been utilized by some of the leading international rail transit manufacturers including Alstom, Siemens and Hitachi across different countries.
The Challenge
To move locomotives, weighing over 70 tons and over 12 meters in length.
No overhead cranes to be involved.
The final solution takes into consideration the structure and flexibility of the materials to be moved.
The working environment, while relatively clean and ordered, has space constraints and special solutions are required to manage the maneuvering in tight spaces.
The Morello Movers Solution
In one specific project case 2 transporters were designed to support both the length and the material structure of the locomotive. The 2 transporters were omnidirectional movers, providing multidirectional steering driven by individually motorized wheel units. A state-of-the-art solution.
The 2 synchronized omnidirectional movers move constantly in tandem, both with and without a load on board. In other words, the load is not a factor for the synchronized movement which is managed by Morello’s hardware and software.
The 2 transporters are designed to move in sync and not lose their synchronized movement even after relatively long operating times and distances. The ultra stable synchronized solution is a Morello in-house innovation, completely developed by Morello engineers.

- Omnidirectional or Multidirectional steering.
- Fully electric motors and steering units. No hydraulic engines resulting in almost zero maintenance and oil and dirt residues.
- Hydraulic suspensions for improved grip and balance on imperfect internal or external surfaces.
- All wheel drive, with individual motors for each wheel, guaranteeing optimal traction on all surfaces and gradients. In addition each wheel unit has an individual braking mechanism giving increased braking power and efficiency.
- Lithium battery power supply.
- Brushless electric motors providing high precision and no maintenance.
- Proprietary Morello software developed and optimized over many years and now used by numerous global corporations.
- System diagnostics on advanced HMI.
- IoT with integrated device for remote technical assistance.
- PLC and HMI equipment: Siemens or Allen Bradley (reliable leading brands)
- Morello OMNI Movers can be designed or upgraded to AGV versions. The upgrading involves the addition of AGV sensors and the installation of additional software.
After Sales Support
Technical Assistance
The on-board integrated remote assistance device allows us to provide you with remote technical assistance directly from our offices.
Thanks to Morello Advanced System Diagnostics operational or technical issues can be analyzed and assessed quickly and easily.
When required our technical team together with our technical support partners can provide on-site technical support.
Spare parts
While Morello’s equipment is highly customized, with many non-standard parts and equipment, we have invested in stocks of multiple spare parts.
We recognize the value of supplying spare parts from stock, minimizing spare parts lead times and possible machine downtime.
Morello aims to provide clients with full after sales service long after initial machine delivery and commissioning.
